Scotty, I’m not sure who makes the case. It was about 100$ at a gun show I went to. It’s a really nice case though. The gun, as you can see, has to be stored in half (which isn’t so bad in paranoia california…)
Also, the scope is a Barska 4-9x, but I DO NOT recommend them. It broke within about 3 months — lost a retaining ring around one of the lenses and the lens piece then jiggled around till it was busted. :/
That is a beautiful piece of California legal equipment. I found your picture while browsing for images of this rifle. This image is one of the best. Well done.
Question: Did you replace the front hand guard yourself? If so where did you find that replacement? (looks great)
The factory photos show a hand guard that can fold out into a tripod.
bob: the factory guard does as advertised. It’s not all that bad really, I just wanted to make the gun look scarier. It’s something like a $40 piece from KelTec themselves.
This is a pretty intimidating looking rifle but I would have to say the M107 50. cal is just about the scariest rifle you could ever see. Also the M107 175mm cannon, a row of those would scare the crap out of anyone on the receiving end.
That is a good looking gun. I am debating whether or not to get the Alpha model for the extra 2.5 inches of barrel length to really maximize the effectiveness of the .223. Is that a flash suppressor or what on the end? Is it mostly for aesthetics or is it particularly functional? Again, good looking gun.
Yeah, flash suppressor. I don’t have any definitive answers, but this particular model was tauted to help stabilize the bullet (forward ports for air ejection in a circle around the barrel exit) and help kick up.
I don’t know for sure if it really does either of them. I think, by feel, that the kick was reduced a bit. Mostly though, I think it’s just awesome looking.
If I could have, though, I’d have gotten a silencer — guns be noisy :/
Howdy. I’ve seriously been thinking about getting one of these. I’m so out of practice it’s not funny. The worst part is, I’m in the military. With all the budget cuts they no longer train us all the time. All the ammo is going overseas to fight in the wars.
I miss shooting expert every year.
Good luck and I hope this rifle holds out for you.
For all you “anti-gun” folks, it’s your choice. I’m not pressing it on you and you shouldn’t press it on me. That’s the way freedom works.
Yours looks great, I just bought 1 today, the Bravo. Can’t wait to get th pistol grip on there and take it too the range ;)
I wonder if Obama’s gonna try taking it away?
Hey Jeff, Nice piece. i have a SU-16CA myself and i personally like it. i also live in california and tho the rules are strict dont mean i wont bend them to my needs. im in iraq right now. but when i get home my rifle is ready for its upgrades, a AR stock and Pistol Grip, extra picatiny rails to be added to the tactical handguard just like yours, a new muzzle break, 100 round beta mag (keep that one to your self), has a 105 lumen power surefire as well. rnrnonly real thing that is needed is a optic. i noticed that you dont recommend the one you have on yours in the pic cause it broke but is there one you do recommend?rnrn-LCpl Rice USMC
I ended up with an EOTech (or Bushnell) Holosight optic. Simple, efficient, very accurate. Great for the types of shooting I was doing. Can highly recommend the variants. (I got the cheaper, consumer version — can’t recall which is which, but it works just stellar.)
It is NOT CAlifornia legal to have a forward verticle grip on a centerfire rifle with detachable magazine.
Also, its illegal (in CA) to have a pistol grip or a magazine that holds more than 10 rounds.
Thanks Jeff for the info on the scope! Good to know what does and does not work.
As for the muzzlebreak thing, I was reading about it just last night. Seems like a lot of money just to- as the website put it “put more sound down range”. All the ports are in front, so it does nothing to stop barrel rise or kick.
I think thats all the responses.
Its now 2009, and I’m on a waiting list to get this rifle for myself.
PS
Kel Tech has released a 7.62mm rifle, but its really expensive!
The SU-16CA is overall a nice rifle. We’ve run some comparitive tests between M-4s, AK variants, the SU-16CA along with Mini-14s and 14 Ranch (all in .223 with the exception of course of the AK), and surprisingly, the majority of officers favored the weight and natural contour of the SU over the M-4. Since magazines are standard AR mags, nice Buschmasters work very well. 2 30s coupled together, and a 20 stored in the stock for counterweight, make a very fine, close-combat rifle. Certainly it doesn’t embrace the simplicity of the Kalish. variants nor as rugged a durability, but still a nice rifle. Civilians in California (non-LEOs): be sure to pick one up before our legislature acts to ban these as well for the populous. You’ll regret not spending the $700 down the road.
PS- don’t waste your money unless you buy the CA model. The A and B lack a “medium” barrel. While the SU is not offered in a heavy barrel configuration, the C and CA are a step up from the A and B configurations. The forward grip/bipod is a joke, and are nothing more than a novelty. Former military personnel still favor the M-4s as it does require some adjustment to wield the SUs more traditional stock. The SU is not quite as easy to field for rapid deployment with a tactical sling or during a building sweep since it lacks the M-4 or AK type pistol grip. However, since residents of the State are limited by law, it’s probably one of the finer “sporter” rifles still available.
Jeff, I just purchased an su-16ca. Does the forend get loose with use? I’m considering installing both the forend and the yh muzzle brake. Let me know what you think. Also, does the muzzle brake reduce accuracy down range? Have you heard of any single sling applications?
Hey Jeff thanks for the imput, i did indeed go with a bushnell 7 power scope for my rifle. i also went with open rings so i could still use the iron sights.
As for the comment on the CA rules yes you are right it is illegal to have a mag over 10 rounds IN your rifle however you may own one if you have had it since 1992 my family being a Military one i have some old 30 rounders lying around.
Now the pistol grip comment, while it is true you are not allowed to have one on a centerfire rifle with a detachable mag there is one exception to the rule. While I was on mid deployment leave from iraq i consulted several gun dealerships as well a multitude of gun nuts. You may have a pistol grip and detachable 10 round mag if you have a “bullet button” mag release installed. After finding this out and agreeing with the recomendation I installed a machined peice of metal over the release button, this prevents the mags release unless you use somthing no larger then a spent .22 lr shell. The metal is 1/4 inch steel and is bolted in place over the release.
As for the accuracy of my rifle in my hands (a trained marine) I find I am dead accurate at 350 yards. The muzzle break I have is a step up from the old one I used before. I have found at 100 it doesnt show a difference but at 300+ I found my shots in tighter groups.
If anyone has any questions about my setup feel free to email ericthemarine@yahoo.com p.s. the rounds i fire for long range are custom reloaded hollow points fathers doing, still havnt got the reloadin down perfect yet.
Is this New York City Legal? I would assume so since California and New York both have the worst gun laws in the country. If so I want one so bad since I cannot get an AR-15
Eh, I’m gonna have to ask a gun store, because the people at Kel Tec Owners Group forums told me no. I don’t see what features it has that don’t comply with the normal law. It has a 10 round capacity which checks out, no pistol grip, and no collapsible stock. Am I missing something?
Whats the point?
Very nice Jeff. Kind of comforting, relaxing and releaving to leave the desk and go pump out a few rounds at the range now and again, isn’t it.
You scare me!
I see you shop at Target!
hi Jeff, nice rifle!
do you also play battlefield 2? my nick is mileezer (seargant)funny.
mileezer
Nice Rifle, what kind of scope and rail is that?
What size and where did you get that case for the rifle? I have an SU-16CA model as well

WoW! Just wow! That is like…. jesus … wow!
Nice Jeff!

WHAT SIZE ROUND DOES IT TAKE 5.56???
it takes .223 remington. Great picture! can’t wait til I get mine.

nice Rifle i will love to get me 1
Now you’ve got the gun. Who you gonna kill? lol
i bought one really cool that we could buy a gun like this the m1a is too much 1499
and this is more lighter
jm is the kel tec forend piece is it plastic or steel does it help anything but look cool
It looks better, plus it allows you to mount things on the front grip. Lasers, better bipods, foregrips, etc.
check this out

is it legal to but a Vertical Grip
on these gun?
Luis, yeah, that’s pretty awesome. If I ever get back, I may very well invest in that upgrade :)
As for the Verts — yes, you can. You’ll notice the forend on the above has a rail which you could attach it to.
Now, whether that makes the gun “big-n-scary” and therefore illegal is a matter up to your local legislature.
This is a pretty intimidating looking rifle but I would have to say the M107 50. cal is just about the scariest rifle you could ever see. Also the M107 175mm cannon, a row of those would scare the crap out of anyone on the receiving end.

Time for you to get an AR or AK.
yes yes where did u get the case? i love my kel tec su 16 one of the best iv had
Got it from some local tradeshow that was passing through town. If I had the case with me, I’d tell you the brand, but it’s an ocean away :(
Good to go
Nice hot lead injector Jeff.
whats the muzzle break brand and model

“Just in case” x)
Thats a TUFFORCE 3-9×42 illuminated compact scope isnt it? With Red/Green crosshairs?
I have the same one :)

The stock foreend always felt a smidge loose to me, and the after market one does as well — but not as much. It’s more than solid enough.
I can’t attest to the accuracy effect of the muzzle break, really. Sorry, been too long since I’ve been shooting.
Slings — hrm, dunno. Don’t use one myself, but I suggest you go to ktog.org and ask on the forums there

That thing looks awsome wish i had one
How much weight does that foregrip add?
Is this New York City Legal? I would assume so since California and New York both have the worst gun laws in the country. If so I want one so bad since I cannot get an AR-15
It’s fully legal in CA, and if we have the strictest gun laws around, then it’s probably legal for you.
That said, IANAL, so make sure to do your research or ask at a gun store.
Otherwise, I fully recommend it. Great rifle, very reliable, and waaaay cheaper than a comparably equiped AR15.
Eh, I’m gonna have to ask a gun store, because the people at Kel Tec Owners Group forums told me no. I don’t see what features it has that don’t comply with the normal law. It has a 10 round capacity which checks out, no pistol grip, and no collapsible stock. Am I missing something?
Actually…the ammunition capacity limit for NYC rifles/shotguns is 5 rounds…not 10 rounds.
