Intuitive Image Zoom Technique
Kim was browsing the Banana Republic site looking at buttons on jackets ( her’s keep falling out :( ) and she showed me this neat rollover zoom image feature:

Regular

Mouse Over’ed
This is a very neat effect — simple, useful, intuitive, and easy to degrade (click would enlarge). Love it! I plan on keeping this little gem in my back pocket. :)
No need to keep it in your back pocket – you can use it right now! This image zoomer is based on the popular JavaScript zoom tool, Magic Zoom. It’s free for non-commercial websites and it’s £25 for commercial sites.

Actually, I got inspired to try this out and see how hard it would be to tinker up something like that. I came up with Unobtrusive, Hovered Image Zooming.
As a proof-of-concept piece, it’s rather nice. Works in the majors I tested (ff2, ie7, saf3.1) but has quite a few bugs once you start putting it to paces.
Anyway, it’s another fun approach to the issue :D
I found that the other day and was impressed — except that it covers up their shopping cart! Whoops! I am surprised they didn’t find another place to put that box.
Definitely interested in MagicToolBox as posted by Jake.
That is an impressive tool. I would like to see this technique used with a Lightbox technique to open the zoom layer in a semi transparent area.
