I recently made the upgrade to OS 10.2 for mac. This whole new rendering engine for the OS is kinda cool, but it’s also not that great for me. See, I have the very first model of the tiBook made – this means I only have 8megs of ram on my video card. Last I read, the new engine doesn’t even kick in at full power unless you have 16mb. Damnit – and there are NO upgrades for my video ram.
That’s one of the biggest downfalls of having a laptop…you can’t upgrade ANYTHING on them. I mean, i really appreciate having this machine – it’s come in really handy being portable, but I can’t ever make it a better machine than it already is. Bah!
The new applications that come with this system are working out nicely – even though we’re still missing a few I really want to check out. Specifically I want to have iCal and iSync. See, once I get iCal, I can completely get rid of microsoft entourage. Now that the apple Mail program is pretty much as full-featured* as Entourage/outlook, and the address book is great, I don’t really need it aside from the calendar.
The reason I’m looking forward to the iSync is so that my palm will be synced up between my calendar, my address book, and maybe even my email. That would be great – having the same information available and sync’ed between all my gadget goodies…ahhh drooool…
Despite all the great things that the system offers, upgrading has it’s problems. So far my biggest gripe is that FruitMenu’s no longer works. If you even have it installed, cnrtl-clicking with my (microsoft) two-button mouse will crash whatever program I click in…including the finder. Bummer.
Second gripe is general upgrade issues…my IM program “forgets” to draw window shadows on it’s self at times…just annoying. There are a few other things like there are these weird sounds that happen while navigating in the finder (i think they are supposed to go with opening and closing windows, but they’re just annoying) and also opening and closing windows causes them to “zoom in/out” which is just a pointless waste of processor power…then again, so is me running a screen saver as my background ;-)
Finally, I found the “wicked-cool” iChat application sucks. I mean, I think if it will work with Rendevouz stuff, that will roXoR hard – but for AIM it’s just kinda ugly, big, and slow compared to Adium. So for now it will stay out of my dock.
Well, in the mean time, why don’t you just enjoy this beautiful screen shot of my desktop!

* – true, Mail may not have as many features, but good lord, it’s just email – how many do you need?!?
